What is Trauma-Informed Practice?
Trauma-informed practice is an organisational and care framework that shifts the approach from "What is wrong with you?" to "What happened to you?" It recognises that trauma is widespread and seeks to understand behaviors as adaptive responses to adversity, while actively avoiding re-traumatisation within care and service systems.
Core Principles
The framework is built on six foundational principles:
- Safety: Ensuring physical, emotional, and psychological safety.
- Trustworthiness: Maintaining clear boundaries, transparency, and consistency in service delivery.
- Choice: Providing participants with options and control over their own care.
- Collaboration: Working with the individual rather than acting as an authority figure doing to them.
- Empowerment: Validating participant strengths and focusing on resilience and recovery.
- Respect for Diversity: Honoring cultural, historical, and personal backgrounds.
Why It Matters
Traditional services can inadvertently re-traumatize individuals if policies and physical environments are rigid or insensitive to triggers. Trauma-informed practice minimises this risk and increases participant engagement, dignity, and feelings of hopefulness.
Ndis Practice Standards vs SIL Staff Training
SIL Practice Standard 2 - Relevant workers delivering supports and services in a participant’s home and daily life have the skills to identify, assess and respond to harm, bullying and conflict in the participant’s home or when in the community, in a timely manner. This includes ensuring workers are trained in de-escalation, trauma-informed practice and positive behaviour support.
