NEW - Music & Art Therapy Prices
In late 2024, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) commissioned an independent review of music and art therapy. This review carefully examined the evidence, benefits, and costs associated with these supports under the NDIS.
The findings confirmed that music and art therapy can be both effective and meaningful for many participants. These therapies were found to support emotional, cognitive, and social outcomes, provided that they are delivered in line with professional standards.
The NDIA will fund music and art therapy under the following conditions:
✔️ There is clear, reliable evidence that the therapy helps people with disability-related needs who have goals similar to the participant.
✔️ Sessions are provided by a qualified therapist who is appropriately registered with a recognised professional association.
✔️ The therapy has a focus on improving or maintaining a person’s **functional capacity** – for example, building skills in communication, emotional regulation, self-expression, or social interaction.
The review also highlighted issues related to costs. Currently, the maximum hourly rate of $193.99 was considered higher than what people outside the Scheme typically pay. This creates inconsistency and reduces value for money for participants.
To address this, the NDIA announced that from November 2024, a new hourly rate of $156.16 will apply for music and art therapy. This adjustment aligns the pricing with the existing counselling support rate, creating greater fairness and consistency across the Scheme.
